Insights: Evidence-based teaching practice

Dear Community,

Recently there has been some welcome discussion in Australian media surrounding the adoption of enhanced educational approaches in school settings.

There has been coverage of the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools’ announcement that it has adopted a pedagogical framework that is grounded in explicit instruction. This follows on from a reported resurgence in support for a phonics-based reading model for equipping our early learners with foundational literacy skills.

At King David we adopt evidence-based pedagogical models that are anchored in an understanding of how children learn and develop. We utilise student data to adjust and enrich our practice and adopt different strategies that are suited for the age and stage of our students. We believe that deeply knowing our students allows us to tailor experiences which enable them to thrive. As Russell Kaplan, our Vice-Principal Teaching and Learning, has state

This week the students in Religion and Society Unit 1 and 3 were invited to participate in a special learning experience at the State Library organised for students at Jewish Day Schools by the Jewish Museum. Luminous showcases 1000 years of Hebrew manuscripts and other rare items. King David was joined by Bialik and Mount Scopus students to see the fascinating artifacts on display and enjoyed a tour of the Luminous exhibition given by Paul Forgasz. They were then treated to a talk by the exhibitions curator, Deborah Rechter, Jewish artist, Victor Majzner and Paul Forgasz.

Gan Rimon's First Bush Kinder for the year

Gan Rimon's First Bush Kinder for the year

One Thursday there was a buzz of energy in the Gan Rimon classroom. The children gathered to read ‘A Walk in the Bush’ by Gwyn Perkins. We discussed the many different types of animals that we might see when in the Urban Forrest. What senses would we be using? Looking, smelling, hearing, and touching… but what happens if we see a spider or a snake? Should we touch them? NO!

Marlon said: If you see a snake, you should freeze and the snake will slither away.

The bus ride over to the Urban Forest was full of games of paper, scissors, rock. Once off the bus we found the Gan Seorah group and had a little morning tea. We then could have an explore and play. We joined with Gan Seorah in a large yarning circle and said thank you to the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation. In our Acknowledgement to Country, we spoke about ways to treat the animals, the land and waterways with respect. We learned some new Bunurong words

Update from our Arava Stationery drive

Update from our Arava Stationery drive

Rabbi Adam Berman, Director of the Arava-Australia partnership has provided an update on partnership projects, including the stationery drive KDS participated in late last year. Please see the attached PDF for the full update. Each child in the Arava received a bag of stationery. Here is a message from one of the parents of children that were sent goods:

To my brothers and sisters across the oceans in Australia.

My name is Stav, I grew up in Moshav Idan in Arava, for the past 6 years I have been living in Sderot with my own family. On the night of October 8, we returned to Arava to my mother's house in Idan (husband, 2 girls and me with a small fetus in the womb). Unfortunately, after 4 months there is still no clear sign of when it will be safe to return home and when the kindergartens will be open in the city so we are still here.

I wanted to thank you deeply for the kind gift. It made the girls very happy.

Year 5 Blast Off!

Year 5 Blast Off!

This week, Year 5 blasted off to the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) to further their exploration of our solar system. After an early start and a bus trip to Strathmore, Year 5 participated in a range of amazing activities. Please click here for photos from the day. The first step: get suited up in a space suit and travel to Mars!

After awakening from cryosleep and touching down on a Mars research base, Year 5 were tasked with conducting experiments testing the living conditions of Mars. Programming Robotic Arms, checking the pH levels of chemicals and growing hydroponics were all in a solar cycle’s work for the young Mars scientists.

Back on Earth, Mission Control was being staffed with other Year 5 scientis

Planting Seeds of Hope with the JNF

Planting Seeds of Hope with the JNF

JNF recently came to our Dandenong Rd campus to share their 'seeds of hope' with our Years 1 - 3 students. Students wrote wishes on cards containing seeds, as an intention for new beginnings and as a symbol of hope and connection between Australia and Israel.

Students learned about our special link to the land of Israel and our roots; the importance of trees to the environment; and what can we do to help the environment.

Every student got a terracotta pot to draw on. Students planted their wishes, which will become Swan River Daisy flowers.

Thank you to Eldad and the JNF for this beautiful activity!

Sharing cultures in Gan Seorah

Sharing cultures in Gan Seorah

Gan Seorah student Leor has a Japanese billet staying at his house. Yujiro and Nicky came into class last week and we were introduced to Yujiiro and learnt that he speaks Japanese. Yujiro treated us to a beautiful story in Japanese while Nicky shared the same story in English. Additionally, Leor kindly taught us hello and goodbye in Japanese. It was such an enriching cultural experience fostering a learning and appreciation for different languages and customs.

Our Year 2 students visited Ancient Persia this week as they reenacted the story of Purim. Please click here to see photos of our marvellous actors. Through costumes and acting, they better understood the heroism of Esther and the tribulations of the Jews of Shushan. In the lead up to Purim, they have been engaged in wonderful Jewish experiential activities, learning about this joyous Jewish festival which commemorates Jewish survival and determination.

Discovering our community together

Discovering our community together

Last week the Year One students embarked on a walking excursion to explore our local community. Students had the opportunity to observe and learn about the various aspects that contribute to the smooth functioning of our neighborhood. Please click here to see photos from their walk.

From bins and benches to doggy bags and parks, our explorers encountered a diverse array of features that help keep our community clean, safe, and enjoyable for all. We even had a delightful encounter with a furry friend sporting a hat! It was truly an amazing day filled with discovery and excitement for all involved.

Year 4s walk in Israel

Year 4s walk in Israel

The Year 4 students excitedly went for a walk in Israel, while we were learning the verb 'Metayel' or 'Metayelet' (going for a walk).

Blending education with outdoor fun, the students carefull drew the map of Israel outside the mansion, marking major cities and places.

Our driveway has become a creation of our adventures in Israel.
