Parashat HaShavua: Tetzaveh

Parashat HaShavua: Tetzaveh

T’tzaveh

Candle-lighting: 7.33pm

Havdalah: 8.30pm

Our parashah opens with the verse “You shall further instruct the Israelites to bring you clear oil of beaten olives for lighting, for kindling lamps regularly” (Exodus 27:20) and continues with detailed instructions on how to build the mishkan (sanctuary) - the initial instructions were already given in last week’s parashah.

What might we learn from such a verse?

Perhaps the “clear” olive oil, produced from an involved and tiring process of labour, symbolises that we must strive to be clear (or pure) in our own lives, refining our middot (character traits) in an attempt to become pure of heart. Working on our middot involves a level of effort that might not come naturally and might even exhaust us. But it is necessary in order for us to be open to allowing light to enter ourselves, and to bring light to those around us.

The verse ends with the idea that the light will be a ner tamid (often translated as an eternal flame),

Insights: Purim mitzvot as a map for happiness

Insights: Purim mitzvot as a map for happiness

Dear Community,

Mishenichnas Adar marbin b'simcha. When the Hebrew month of Adar comes it is said that we increase our joy in the lead up to the delights of Purim.

This makes it an opportune time to discuss happiness and what we can do to ensure that our young people are experiencing this in abundance.

Until recently, consistent research into satisfaction levels over the course of a lifetime, designated childhood as a time of peak happiness that tended to be followed by a dip during adolescence which plateaued over adulthood and then rocketed back up in senior years.

This was part of the rationale for the introduction of middle schooling models where schools tried to respond to the disengagement that can occur in early adolescence and attempted to adopt models of education that worked with the developmental flow that occurs at this stage. Provision of opportunities to align social experiences with learning growth, hands-on learning activities that provide real world applications and understanding teachers who maintain high expectations in a non-confrontational environment are all features of a successful model.

However, there has been a recent proliferation of research that challenges the assumptions regarding the peaks and troughs in our stages of happiness. A recent article reported in The Guardian explored the findings of a UN commissioned report which detailed the declining levels of happiness in six English-speaking countries - Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

VCE Legal Studies students visit the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court

VCE Legal Studies students visit the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court

On Wednesday the Year 11 and 12 VCE Legal Studies students visited the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in the city to attend the Courts Education Program and gain firsthand experience of the workings of the Victorian legal system. After being ushered by a court registrar to an empty courtroom students met with Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano who spoke about his role as a magistrate and various aspects of his job.

Then it was time to witness the justice system in action. Students spent an hour visiting different courts and watching them deal with a variety of criminal matters from bail applications and contested hearings through to theft charges and diversion order applications. Students then returned to the courtroom to debrief with the magistrate. It was there that the students were able to ask questions in order to gain a deeper insight into the role of the magistrate and the role of the court. The excursion deepened students’ understanding of various legal concepts covered in class and they found it an enriching learning experience.

Sharing reading strategies with Prep Parents

Sharing reading strategies with Prep Parents

This week, we had the wonderful opportunity to connect with our Prep families for Prep Reading Night, where we explored the exciting journey of our students beginning to read. We discussed why and how we teach reading, highlighting the various strategies we use to support early literacy development, including phenological awareness so students learn to hear each letter in a word, learn how to combine letter sounds to decode words, and use daily retrieval and practice to reach fluency.

We explained that the take-home readers are designed to reinforce what students have been taught so that they enjoy being successful at reading and keep stretching themselves.

It was fantastic to share insights into how children build their reading skills and the ways families can support this learning at home.

Gan Seorah's turn at Gan Tevah - Bush Kinder

Gan Seorah's turn at Gan Tevah - Bush Kinder

We all came to school very excited on Wednesday morning. There was a buzz of energy in the Gan Seorah classroom. Before we went, we read A Walk in the Bush by Gwyn Perkins. We discussed the many different types of animals that we might see when in the Urban Forest. What senses would we be using? Looking, smelling, hearing, and touching… but what happens if we see a spider or a snake? Should we touch them? NO!

Once we arrived, we walked through the forest to find the spot where we could play. Before running off we spoke about the rules and what we need to do to stay safe. We then had an explore and play.

The children entered the bush with confidence, most children sharing how they remembered visiting last year.

We observed, dug, ran around with tree logs, and found a “sleeping mouse” which was fascinating (and disgusting!) Lots of time was spent running up

The Art and Science of Crystal Growing

The Art and Science of Crystal Growing

The Year 5 students have engaged in an Art/Enrichment Project in the scientific field of crystallography. Our Art connection involved the exploration of Israeli artist Sigalit Landau and her salt crystal sculptures. Landau creates her work using the high salinity of the Dead Sea, submerging objects for different periods of time, constantly checking to see how the salt crystals are growing on the surfaces of her objects. The Year 5 students followed a similar process through experimentation and they are currently working on their own sculptures that will be covered in a rock salt surface texture inspired by Landau.

Our crystallographers engaged in experimental inquiry to understand the process involved in crystal formation, developed scientific vocabulary and created crystals. Crystals were formed by dissolving aluminum potassium sulfate in water and suspending seed crystals in the solution. Over several weeks crystal growth was observed as the water evaporated. Results varied from masses of tiny crystals to single crystals with good colour, clarity and cut.

Crazy hair and hat day at the DRC

Crazy hair and hat day at the DRC

This week to mark the start of Adar, where we are asked to "increase our joy", we came to school and Kinder with "crazy" hair or hats. Please click here to see a selection of photos from the day.

Amy Samowitz from the ELC reports:

This week we marked Rosh Chodesh Adar, the first day of the Hebrew month of Adar.  Thank you for sending the children in with colourful hairstyles to bring in Adar.

Thank you to Zander’s mum, Elise for joining us to help make Oznei Haman/hamantashen!

The children cut circles from puff pastry, added a spoonful of jam in the middle then pinched the edges to form three corners – just like Haman’s three pointed hat.

The children enjoyed eating their hamantashen for afternoon tea.

Purim is a time for fun, laughter, and celebration, and Crazy Hair Day is a great way for the children to embrace this festive Chag.

Judaism and AI

Judaism and AI

This week our Year 11 students were privileged to hear from Melbourne-born Rabbi Danny Schiff, who serves as the Foundation Scholar of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.

His presentation, which was engaging, interactive and informative, dealt with Judaism and AI, exploring the interface between them.

Schiff, the former Rabbi of Temple Beth Israel, will be speaking there on the topic on Wednesday night, 12 March at 730pm, together with KDS parent and hi-tech entrepreneur Gideon Kowadlo (click here for more information).

As a day school affiliated with the Union of Progressive Judaism, we are always pleased to partner with Temple Beth Israel.
