Insights: Little changes lead the way

Insights: Little changes lead the way

Dear Community,

Yesterday we held a wonderful Back to School Service. I would like to share with you an extract from the speech that I offered to our students to welcome them to the event.

“Students, one of the great things about being in a school is that each year you are delivered a fresh start. Some of you have experienced a change in school, others a change in campus, some have new classmates and new teachers.

This gives us the opportunity to think carefully about the new year and what we want to change.

I thought I’d share something with you today about an experience I had when I was a student. This was a time where I made an active decision to make a change. In all honesty, I think that this moment helped me become the person I am today. I have shared this with colleagues before, but hope that there is something useful in it for you, our students.

When I was in Year 9, there was a time when my Geography classmates decided in an unspoken agreement to punish a teacher who we felt had not adequately taught us before an exam. This was in relation to a unit on volcanoes - a topic the teacher had not spent any class time on.

Celebrating Tu BiSh'vat at our Back to School Service

Temple Beth Israel warmly welcomed us for our annual Back to School Service, which coincided with Tu BiSh'vat. To celebrate this, the theme of the Service was seasons, with the shul decorated with trees showing Autumn, Summer, Winter and Spring. Please click here to see photos from the Service. More photos will be added as we receive them.

Planned and led by our Vaadah Yehadut (Year 12 Jewish Life committee), the Service honoured our Class of 2025, and provided inspiration for growth throughout this year. Principal Marc Light's speech asked us to reflect on what it is to be our best selves, while Year 12 student Billy Altman's drash on Parashat Yitro shared the message that legacy is not about grand gestures but rather what we do in the small moments. Year 12 student Harriet Popper reflected on the relationship between her school journey and her Jewish identity, that through this education she is proud of our customs, rituals and history.

The Torah service was expertly led by Year 8 student Millie Zelman with Gemma Hadfield (Year 9), Ezra Faigenbaum (Year 10) and our Coordinator Jewish Experiential Education Joshua New, leyning.

Year 12 student Kiera Edelstein was called to Torah for the first time, becoming Bat Mitzvah. Mazal tov to Kiera and her family!

Grandparents Esti Eshel and Pam Gelfand led a blessing for the next generation, while Year 9 Coordinator Brad Smith led a prayer for the hostages and Learning Area Leader Hebrew & Jewish Studies Feygi Phillips offered a prayer for students on behalf of the teachers. There were also blessings for Australia and the State of Israel.

Rabbi Allison Conyer offered the Year 12 students the Birkat HaKohanim, blessing them with a beautiful year with this ancient prayer.

Thank you to the Vaadah Yehadut (Year 12 student committee): Daniel Bass, Hugo Black, Abi Kausman, Mia Milner and Kayla Pizzo for your vision, planning and facilitation of the service. Thank you to Joshua New, Ilan Bloch and Jade Karp for your oversight and direction.

Drash for Parashat Yitro, by Billy Altman (Year 12)

Drash for Parashat Yitro, by Billy Altman (Year 12)

Candle lighting: 8.02pm

Shabbat ends: 9pm

Year 12 student Billy Altman gave the drash at the Back to School Service. Here is his reflection on Yitro:

Parashat Yitro is a big one. It’s the parashah where we receive the Ten Commandments; the foundation of who we are as a Jewish people. But before that, something interesting happens. The parashah actually starts with Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, recognising the miracles that G-d performed for the Jewish People. The parashah goes from one person realizing something powerful to an entire nation standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, hearing the voice of G-d. And I think that’s something we can all relate to: change. Moving from one stage to the next, from one identity to another. And that's exactly what we’re doing right now, starting the new school year.

Legacy

The Ten Commandments weren’t just a set of rules. They were a turning point. Until that moment, the Jewish people had been slaves, then refugees, wandering in the desert. But now? Now they had something real to hold onto. A moral code, a shared identity, a legacy to pass down.

As a Year 12 student, that idea of legacy feels very real right now. I’m reaching the point where I’ve started thinking about what legacy I want to leave behind, whether that’s leadership, kindness or the way I’ve tried to shape this school community. But legacy isn’t about big, dramatic moments; it’s about the small things we do every day. The way we show up for others, the effort we put in and the example we set.

Celebrating Tu BiSh'vat in Junior Kinder

Celebrating Tu BiSh'vat in Junior Kinder

In the lead up to BiSh'vat we have been reading books about trees, created our own tree crafts and have been learning what trees need to grow and what foods grow on trees. Tu BiSh'vat is the birthday of the trees, a day to celebrate nature and everything trees provide for us – fruits, shade and clean air.

On Wednesday, Hannah and Amalia from Bunnings Warehouse came to visit us for a planting session focusing on themes of Tu BiSh'vat: planting and environmental responsibility.

Each child in Junior Kinder was given a pot to first decorate. They scooped soil into their pots then got to choose their own yellow or orange marigold flower to plant.  We spoke about what the flowers need to help them grow – soil, sun and water.

We hope the children enjoy taking care of their flowers at home and watching them grow. (For the children that don’t attend Wednesdays, we have planting for them to do when they are next in).

Soldier from Beit Halochem visits KDS

Soldier from Beit Halochem visits KDS

Year 11 students were privileged to hear from Boris Shtonder, a visiting IDF soldier, who was injured during the current conflict, losing a leg. He shared his experiences with the students, giving them a greater insight into the war in Gaza.

His presentation included a video about Beit Halochem (ZDVO), an NGO which provides rehabilitation services to injured IDF soldiers, as well as a photo slide presentation about his personal story.

Boris taught students the importance of belief in a cause, resilience in the face of challenges, and of serving others.

As a Zionist school, we are proud to collaborate with Beit Halochem (ZDVO) and thank them for facilitating the visit, which stressed Jewish solidarity and Jewish peoplehood.

Kabbalat Siddur - Receiving our new Siddurim

Kabbalat Siddur - Receiving our new Siddurim

On Tuesday 11 February, our Year 3 students and families gathered for a meaningful and special Kabbalat Siddur. Please click here to see photos from the morning. Please note, there are more photos on the myKDS Photo Gallery. This was the first time the students officially received their Years 3-5 siddur. During T’filah, It was wonderful to witness the passing on of our traditions from generation to generation through the beauty of the brachot and songs.

At the conclusion of T’filah, our students and families came together to decorate and personalise the front and back covers of their siddurim. Families have taken home their children's siddurim to inscribe personal brachot and dedications to their child. Our wish for our students as they begin to use their siddurim is for it to become a tool kit to help deepen their connection to their Jewish identity and the wider Jewish community.

Meaningful Welcome to Country ceremonies

Meaningful Welcome to Country ceremonies

Our students were welcomed onto country on Monday in a smoking ceremony at each campus, led by Boonwurrong elder Uncle William Pepper. This ceremony usually happens on the first day of school for the year but was postponed due to the heat last Monday. The smoking ceremony fire included cherry ballart leaves, representing the next generation, wattle for knowledge, and gum leaves for diversity. Please click here for some photos. The ceremony helps us begin the year with purpose and acknowledge the thousands of years of learning that have already taken place on these lands. The smoke cleanses and acts as a connection between fire, air and earth. Thank you to Uncle William and his family for the meaningful ritual.

At the Dandenong Road campus, Senior Kinder students participated in the Welcome to Country ceremony. Kindergarten teacher Amanda Dernham writes:

Maths with monsters in Year 1

Maths with monsters in Year 1

This week, students had a blast bringing their MAB monsters to life! Using MAB blocks, they built creative creatures before exploring and evaluating each other's designs. As part of the activity, students estimated the total value of each monster by counting the tens and ones, then compared their guesses to the actual MAB value. It was a fun and engaging way to apply their math skills!

Resident of Netiv Haasara shares her experiences of Oct 7

Hila Fenlon, a resident of Netiv Haasara, on the boundary line with the Gaza Strip, spoke with our Hanhagah members about her experiences on October 7. She was joined by Tim Wainwright, from Operation Fire Support, who has travelled to Israel five times to volunteer to help train locals to fight fires in the area, caused by Hamas' incendiary balloons.

We thank Eldad Shoham of JNF Australia, who facilitated the visit, as part of promoting the organisation's annual Green Sunday appeal, which will take place this Sunday.

AJAX revs up for footy season at KDS

The girls of Years 3-5 had an amazing day as they were visited by two incredible coaches from AJAX: Yael and Lital. The girls quickly got into some handballing and marking drills. There were screamers happening all over the place. These girls were very excited to play footy and they were shown highlights of the AFLW in class. We hope they all turn out for the open day on Sunday 16 February. See the attached fliers. Go Jackettes!!!

Celebrating Tu BiSh'vat in Year 1

Celebrating Tu BiSh'vat in Year 1

What an incredibly fun way the Year 1 students celebrated Tu BiShvat with a Seder, making and creating their own dried fruit skewers. Please click here to see photos of the Year 1 students enjoying their Seder. Students compared fresh and dry fruit and learnt why it’s important to eat these fruits on Tu BiSh'vat.  It was also a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 students to say the Shehecheyanu bracha which we recite when we experience something new for the first time in a calendar year.

Year 2 take Flight AP014 to Shushan

Year 2 take Flight AP014 to Shushan

Welcome to Shushan! This week, our Year 2 students travelled back in time on board Flight AP014, direct from Melbourne to Ancient Persia! Please click here to see photos from the journey. Ahead of our exploration of the story and mitzvot of Purim, our students created their very own passports, grabbed their boarding passes, and were ready for security checking by Pilot Ike. Teachers Tammy and Sophie accompanied the students on the flight which included a full security briefing, inflight entertainment and snacks, and the most remarkable views over the desert. Our students will take multiple flights this year throughout the region as we connect the Jewish calendar and our festivals to the travels of our ancestors. Purim is almost a month away, and we can't wait!

Mazal tov Zac!

Mazal tov Zac!

Zac Shafer of Year 4 has been accepted into the Melbourne Youth Concert Band. The Melbourne Youth Concert band is part of the MYO (Melbourne Youth Orchestras) program which has been going for 50 years, bringing 600 young musicians aged between 8-25 together across 14 ensembles every weekend. They rehearse at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. This is very prestigious and a great reward for his many years learning and practising trumpet at school.

Zac approached the audition with great maturity, which the panel commented on. He played four scales, ‘The Last Post’ and a portion of ‘Malaguena’. Zac took up trumpet at KDS when he was five years old. He practises trumpet at least 45 minutes a day and at least five days a week. He learns with our wonderful music teacher; Lachlan MacKay. He also learns piano and guitar. Zac will be sitting his Grade 4 AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) trumpet exam this semester. (For context universities say students should be at Grade 7 level for entry to uni courses. This exam will require him to present four pieces (in styles of baroque, jazz, Latin, and military), 16 scales and arpeggios from memory, other technical exercises, a theory and aural test, and sight reading. Zac's entry into the ensemble will make him one of the youngest members but also one of the more advanced players.

See current student Reuben and alumni at Es Klingt Besser oyf Yiddish

On 20, 22 and 23 February, I will be performing with other extremely talented local musicians in Kadimah’s show Es Klingt Besser oyf Yiddish (It's Better in Yiddish). The show takes classic hits and gives them a Yiddish twist. Being involved in music productions outside of school has been extremely rewarding but it was ultimately what I learned through music production at school that made me feel comfortable performing in external settings. Working in spaces like the NANA band, as well as choir and musicals, has given me a great feel for collaborating with other musicians, not to mention boosting my confidence in performing.

So please come see the show and get involved in music in school and out!!
