Junior School's Rosh HaShanah packs of joy

Junior School's Rosh HaShanah packs of joy

To bring some Rosh HaShanah joy to us in lockdown, the ELC, Junior School and Parents' Association put together special Rosh HaShanah gift packs for all families which were collected from the Junior School today.

The packs contain Rosh HaShanah activities and gifts. The ELC packs also include apples and honey while the Junior School packs contain all the materials students will need for the Rosh HaShanah Festival activities which will be running on Monday 6 September.

The KDSPA is thinking of every King David School family during this time and have included a Rosh HaShanah surprise for each family as well.

Dear Community,

A phenomenon of living in the Diaspora is the dualism involved in simultaneously keeping in mind our secular and Jewish life experiences. This can affect us at many levels but one pragmatic one is holding two conflicting calendars in consideration. There are times when this can prove challenging, for instance the dreaded Yom Kippur - AFL Grand Final clashe

Year 5s creative simanim

Year 5s creative simanim

This week Year 5 students explored the traditional simanim of Rosh HaShanah.

On the first night of Rosh HaShanah many Jews have the minhag (custom) of conducting a ‘Seder Simanim’. In this ritual tasting of symbolic foods, each omen is followed by a request that it be God’s will to bring about a particular fortune in the year to come. The Hebrew word for carrot, gezer, is similar to the word gzeirah, decree. We hope for a favourable judgment for the New Year!

In a fun twist, the students baked their carrots into a yummy carrot cake. In the lesson that followed, students

Preps and Year 2s visit the Shofar Factory

Preps and Year 2s visit the Shofar Factory

Being in lockdown wasn’t going to stop us from enjoying a fascinating visit with the Shofar Factory!

Rabbi Yossi joined the Preps and Year 2s online this week to show us various shofarot and teach us how they are made. We learned about not using deer antlers - they aren’t horns! Not using a cow’s horns - remember the sin of the Golden Calf? (shhhhh!) Ideally we use a ram’s horn although you can also make beautiful shofarot from the African Kuta, Israeli Ibex or even a buffalo - but you’d better have super strong muscles to hold that last one up when you are blasting 100 sounds on Rosh HaShanah!

Students and Staff learn how we can help Afghanistan

Students and Staff learn how we can help Afghanistan

KDS Students and staff joined Gideon Reisner from Stand Up for a lunchtime seminar to learn more information about the current situation in Afghanistan. Gideon placed the rise of the Taliban into historical context, starting with tensions between Great Britain and Russia in the 19th century.

Gideon charted the interventions of Russia, Great Britain and the United States in Afghanistan, detailing in particular the conflict within the country since the Saur revolution in 1978. Students discussed the 43 years of conflict, and why nations have competing interests in the region.

Hanhagah 5782 Elections are underway!

At The King David School we are passionate about fostering strong, innovative and impactful young leaders. Although leadership is not always positional, an opportunity to be in a leadership position can give our students a platform to innovate, create, reflect and shape their community. Through the Hanhagah leadership model we endeavour to create a supportive environment where elected students are able to take on the challenge of leading the student body and school culture.

The great round challah bake

The great round challah bake

On Thursday afternoon, junior school students and their families joined in our great round challah bake!

Louise Lowinger taught students how to make round challah, and then amazed us with her variations: challah shaped like a flower, a pull-apart loaf, and challah braided like a basket.

As Louise expertly demonstrated her challah skills, David Opat entertained us with his best bad challah jokes - reminding us they "never get stale!" (zing!) and helped us boogie while we bake with his DJing.
