Chasing the Choshech away for Chanukah

Chasing the Choshech away for Chanukah

As an introduction to Chanukah, the festival of lights, in the last week week the children learned all about Orr (light) and Choshech (darkness) during Hebrew.

We talked about what kind of things we can see outside during the day (Yom) and what we can see during the night (Laila) and what we usually use to chase the darkness away, like fire, electricity lights, torch and most importantly the sun.

The children could not wait to sing and do the actions for our very Israeli Hanukkah song - Banu choshech le’garesh (In English, ‘We’re here to chase the darkness’).

Insights: Fostering a love of Israel

Insights: Fostering a love of Israel

Dear Community,

In just under two weeks, we will be sending our largest ever cohort of students and staff to Israel for their fabulous Yesh experience. “Yesh” has a dual meaning. It literally translates to “have” but is used in Hebrew as a celebratory exclamation akin to “awesome!”. Its second meaning is as a compound of Yisrael Sheli - my Israel. This year to make up for last year’s missed trip during the period of COVID restrictions, we have invited both Year 10 and Year 11 students to participate.

We are tremendously excited for our students to see firsthand what they have spent their school lives learning about. They will have extraordinary access to carefully curated opportunities that will develop their understanding of Israel’s land, people, politics, culture and challenges. They will be exposed to varying religious, cultural and political ideas and will come back engaged and

KDS at the Victorian Young Leaders Global Youth Forum

KDS at the Victorian Young Leaders Global Youth Forum

This week, ten Year 9 students have been involved in a wonderful learning opportunity as part of the Victorian contingent of the Global Youth Forum for 2022.

The Global Youth Forum is a 3-day experiential learning program for Year 9 Victorian students to connect synchronously online with peers from a range of countries and schools across the Asia-Pacific region. This includes peers from China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The forum focused on: global citizenship, culture and identity, leadership skills, general capabilities, including intercultural capability, and activate student voice and agency.

Our students engaged online in a range of collaborative learning activities including discussions with peers from across the region, Melbourne University undergraduate student mentors and their teachers. Students had guest presentations from a range of speakers

Workshopping morning Tefillot

Workshopping morning Tefillot

This week our Jewish Experiential Educators workshopped some of our morning tefillot with the Year 5 students. The students were led through a series of activities and discussions to broaden their understanding of the tefillot we collectively express as a community. They explored the concept of metaphors in Birchot HaShachar and offered personal contexts for deepening our consciousness when repeating the words we have come to know so well through years of daily prayers. Thank you to Avi and Georgia for leading a thought-provoking and interesting session!

Statewide Science Talent Search success

Statewide Science Talent Search success

The King David School was one of 144 schools that entered the statewide Science Talent Search. Interested students committed lunchtimes and time after school delving into scientific principles related to an area of interest. Our budding scientists were required to invent, experiment or construct a model encompassing innovative ideas detailed in a comprehensive written report. This year students were keen to research areas of interest, or to address matters of concern related to the community or environment. A diverse range of sophisticated projects were produced from examining contaminated local waterways to research into our solar system.

On Wednesday 16 November, students attended the online Presentation Ceremony for the Talent Search. We were fortunate to hear about the theme of this year’s Talent Search, ‘Glass: More than meets the eye’ from The University of Melbourne’s Dr John Farmer OAM and optometrist Dr Lanka Wic

A day in the Lab: Heritage Victoria Archaeology laboratory excursion

A day in the Lab: Heritage Victoria Archaeology laboratory excursion

11 November saw our Year 9 class head to Heritage Victoria to meet Jeremy Smith (Principal Archaeologist), Bronwyn Woff (Heritage Curator) and Katerina Karanikas (Heritage Curator). Please click here to see photos from the excursion. A shop which had burned down had perfectly preserved a layer of artifacts including carbonised biscuits with the brand still on. A decorated chamber pot testified to the level of odour which was tolerated in colonial times as Melbourne was being established and pipes had not yet been laid for sewage. Evidence from a school included a hand carved sword, sling shot pouches and evidence of bullying according to Woff, in the form of single shoes which were recovered from a ‘night soil’ pit. Karanikas explained fine pieces from&n

Crime, punishment and society

Crime, punishment and society

Our history hounds in Year 10 have been studying the history of deviance, crime and punishment in their Year 10 elective of the same name. This week they presented their research to senior students and staff in our inaugural Deviance, Crime and Punishment Expo. To see images click here. From serial killers to witches, students have undertaken an interdisciplinary examination of the legal responses to crime in the 19th century alongside the burgeoning field of psychology to categorise and institutionalise criminals and deviants. Students created podcasts and posters to showcase their research to staff and students - fascinating and, at times, gruesome stuff!

Helping with the transition to Prep

Helping with the transition to Prep

Our Senior Kindergarten children are currently in the midst of transitioning from Kinder to primary school. It is a time of great excitement as they visit their new classrooms and have a taste of what’s to come. For example, last Friday the children who are going to The King David School, enjoyed Kabbalat Shabbat with Louise in the Jewish Studies room. She was very impressed by all our ruach, knowledge and singing!

Throughout this term in our classroom and library sessions, we have had stories being read to us by the Prep Teachers and the Heads of the Junior School. We have visited the Hebrew room with Shiri for Hebrew sessions, as well as visited the Prep classrooms.

Setting time aside to focus on transitions is important as it allows children the opportunity to start becoming familiar with their new environment, new faces, ask questions and seek reassurance if needed.

However, it is worth remembering that transitions are a<
