A Carnival fit for a King!

A Carnival fit for a King!

We did it! What a fantastic, fun day out for our entire community! The rain couldn’t dampen our spirits or keep our wonderful King David community away. Thousands of people came through the gates on Sunday for the much-loved King’s Carnival. Please click here to see photos from the day. More photos are available on the myKDS Photo Gallery. Proud families and teachers watched on as our students performed on the stage. The food court was buzzing with delicious food and treats all day long. Children adored the arts and crafts activities and loved playing the games and winning amazing prizes! There were fabulous bargains in the second hand book stall and the vintage clothes shop.

We welcomed families from outside our school community who loved exploring the Magid Campus and were impressed with the King David community spirit on display. We welcome these families to join us and we encourage all King David families to get involved behind the scenes for the next Parents’ Association event. It takes a village to pull off this event - and we are so thankful for the 260+ volunteers who came together to make it happen!

Thank you to our major sponsors - Gary Peer, Cupra Brighton and Moose. Thanks also to all of the suppliers who made donations of prizes and food items and to the Grandparents and Friends of KDS who made donations towards the costs of King’s Carnival.

Insights: Community spirit soars at King's Carnival

Dear Community,

Like so many of you, I spent last Sunday at our famous King’s Carnival.

Alongside the nervous members of the King David School Parents’ Association, I experienced a sleepless Saturday night with repeated checks of various weather apps looking for a second, third and fourth opinion in the hope that the expected rain would stay away.

Well the rain did not stay away. But nor did the school community!

Moving around the Magid Campus I was overwhelmed by the positivity, joy and togetherness that was on clear display.

We clearly have something very special at our school. We have a parent, grandparent, student and staff body who recognise the value of community - we are so grateful for the way that you show your support quite literally in rain, hail and shine.

The King’s Carnival is also an opportunity to display the wonderful talent and courage of so many young and older performers. We enjoyed a tremendous extended show full of singing, dancing, magic and instrumental performers. This showcased students from the youngest years of the School through to graduates.

Not to be outdone, the highlights of the day included a teacher band and a rocking dads' band who performed with such verve that they managed to get the crowd of parents and onlookers dancing. “How embarrassing!” squealed their secretly delighted children.

Melkam Sigd Bahal (Chag Sigd Sameach)

Melkam Sigd Bahal (Chag Sigd Sameach)

During Kabbalat Shabbat today, Years 6-8 students learned about the festival of Sigd (from the word 'prostration'), traditionally celebrated by Beita Yisrael (Ethiopian Jews) and, since 2008, as an Israeli national holiday. Sigd is held 50 days after Yom Kippur, to reaffirm the commitment of Beita Yisrael to Judaism, God and the Torah, and to the dream of returning to Jerusalem.

At lunchtime, students and staff came together to eat vegan (except for honey) Ethiopian food, including injera bread with stews, and himbasha bread with Gumuz honey, along with iced thyme-infused Ethiopian tea. People learned more about the festival, listened to Ethiopian Jewish music and heard from Eginsu Meyer, an Ethiopian-Israeli who made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) at age six.

Sigd falls tomorrow (29 Heshvan) but because Sigd observance includes fasting (until lunchtime) and, in Israel, other non-"Shabbat-friendly" activities, it was celebrated publicly in Jerusalem yesterday. You can see photos here

Celebrating Sigd allowed our students to experience Jewish life and living through a different lens and to bond with our siblings from Beita Yisrael and the rest of Israel.

Noah visits Year 1s!

This term, Year 1 students learnt about Noah's Ark. We spent a couple of weeks studying the story and learning about being kind and righteous people. As a celebration for all their hard work, Noah came to visit the students all dressed up as animals today as they completed some fun activities! Click here for photos.

Student creativity and talent on display

Student creativity and talent on display

A great celebration of student creativity and talent at the Junior School Creative Arts Expo yesterday. Please click here to see photos from the event.

There were impressive performances from students learning a range of instruments including strings, woodwind and guitar.  Our Junior Choir and RocKing David Band had the audience toe tapping to some great renditions.  And, to top it all off, there was a selection of artwork to admire from every student from Prep to Year 5.  A real feast for the senses.

Year 5 student leaders organised and ran a sausage sizzle with proceeds going to Keysborough CFA to assist in their campaign to source a new fire truck for the 2024/2025 season.

Thank you to Danielle Matulis from the Art Department at Junior School for co-ordinating this together with Nissim Ben-Salamon and instrumental teaching staff at the Junior School.

Citizen Spokesperson Eli Parkes speaks to Year 8

Citizen Spokesperson Eli Parkes speaks to Year 8

Year 8 students were privileged to hear Eli Parkes speak about his experience making aliyah to Israel and his contributions to the war effort after Oct 7. Eli was raised in Melbourne and barracks for the Pies. He made aliyah after he finished university. Eli moved because he "wanted to be in the place where the Jewish story is currently being written."

Eli spoke to students about Israel's place as the biggest technology hub outside of Silicon Valley. He shared his work with Apple as a chip designer, working on Apple's first in-house system on a chip (SoC) chip. After a few years at Apple, he left his role to pursue working for a start-up.

However, shortly after he left Apple, Oct 7 occurred and Eli found himself without a job and wanting to help the war effort. Eli said that during this time, the sense that 'Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh' - all Jews are responsible for each other - was particularly pertinent. Shortly after Oct 7, a friend contacted him and asked him to contribute to the National Public Diplomacy Directorate. This was a team of Israeli Olim (immigrants to Israel)  who would work from the Prime Minister's Office to help get Israel's perspective to foreign media outlets.

Chanukah is coming!

Chanukah is coming!

The week Gan Chitah have started our Chanukah leanring. This year Chanukah begins on the evening of 25 December and ends evening Thursday 2 January.

All year we have focused on our cultural learning program which includes learning about different festivals from around the globe. Gan Chitah children have embraced each festival with enthusiasm and curiosity. Through storytelling, songs, food, craft, and many other activities, they have built a foundation of understanding that supports both their sense of identity and their awareness of the wider world. Learning about Chanukah will be no exception; the children will explore the story of Chanukah and discover the traditions and symbols of this magical chag.

The children have already embraced the Chanukah story about King Antiochus and Yehuda Maccabee and how a small group of Jewish people called the Maccabim stood up for their beliefs and sent Antiochus and his men out of Israel. And ofcourse the Chanukah miracle - how they found only enough oil to burn for one night but something amazing happened and the oil lasted for 8 whole nights. This is why Chanukah is celebrated for 8 nights and this why light is such an important symbol of the Chag.

Hebrew Learning Spotlight: Celebrating Friendship

Hebrew Learning Spotlight: Celebrating Friendship

Over the past few weeks, our Year 4 Hebrew group proudly completed Chaverim Be'Ivrit 2. The theme of this book was Friendship, and students enjoyed reading stories about Tamar, the main character, and her circle of friends.

As a final activity, students revisited all the stories in the book, applying the vocabulary and sentence patterns they had learned to write their own heartfelt stories about one of their closest friends. This creative project showcased their language skills and deepened their understanding of friendship in a meaningful way.

Well done to all our budding authors!

Gan Gefen visits MoPA

Gan Gefen visits MoPA

For our final class excursion, the children had an incredible experience at the Museum of Play and Art (MoPA), a space designed to inspire creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. After a quick morning tea, they were divided into two groups. One of our MoPA educators, Zoe Ziguras, was a King David School graduate!

The excitement was palpable as the children eagerly explored the interactive activities. They collaborated to build impressive structures using giant blocks, enhancing their teamwork and problem-solving skills. Designing and racing LEGO cars on a rollercoaster track sparked creativity and refined their fine motor skills. At the air pipes station, they experimented with air-powered balls, igniting curiosity about scientific concepts like airflow and motion.

The adventure continued in Sunset City (the castle), where they explored and climbed, boosting their coordination, confidence, and resilience. In a quieter moment, the children enjoyed a captivating story about mixing colours and construction vehicles.

The day ended on a high note with a lively disco party, where they danced joyfully with friends, strengthening their social bonds and celebrating movement. This excursion was filled with discovery, creativity, and fun—a perfect culmination of our year together!

A win for Year 7 EISM Hockey!

A win for Year 7 EISM Hockey!

This week the Year 7 girls' EISM hockey team took on Plenty Valley for EISM sport. All other teams had a bye. The team played for the first time this season with 11 on the field. Our 1-0 win came from an excellent push out from Hannah, an initial goal shot from Millie and the final shot over the line being touched by Georgia. The defence worked hard, Sasha and Emmy and Asha, along with Freya in goals, cleared the circle and made some accurate passed ou tot the halves and forwards. At times they were under pressure but stayed determined and strong.

We look forward to a final games next week for EISM sport round 7.

A reminder to families, the Maccabi Hockey Club is looking to expand in 2025. Year 6's this year have done some hockey in PE and selected students have done this earlier in the year as part of the year 5/6 round robin. Selected Year 7 boys and girls have both played hockey as part of the EISM competition too. Please see more information further down in the Harp about the Hockey Club.

Thoughts, Beliefs and Wonderings in Prep Jewish Studies

Thoughts, Beliefs and Wonderings in Prep Jewish Studies

Prep students have recently explored and expanded their ideas about God and Creation. They used the story 'What is God Like?' by Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner to inspire the examination of their own thoughts, beliefs and wonderings about God and the concept of a singular Creator. Photos of their learning are available on the myKDS Photo Drop.

Here are some of the students' thoughts:

"I think God is like a stream of water. He is life growing (giving)." ~Julius

"God is like God. He’s just himself. I think God’s a boy name. God is generous with love." ~Ceci

"She is like a beam of light. She’s very kind and helpful." ~Noam

"I think God probably looks like a miracle because he is a miracle! Or maybe she? Or maybe they are??" ~Sage

"How did God make the world?" ~Isla

"Did God make the world?" ~Henni

"What did God use to make the world?" ~Alma

"Why did God make the world?" ~Ilan
