Year 5 poetry exploration

Year 5 poetry exploration

Year Five students have been exploring the genre of poetry. In the writing portion of the unit, students worked towards expressing feelings and experiences through visual and sensory tools, and through auditory, musical and rhythmic tools. Poems were created that experimented with structures, ideas and stylistic features of selected poets. Noah found that through Redacted or Blackout Poetry, he could create great poems from prose (please see the blue poem pictured). Willow found it interesting that she could write Found Poetry (pictured) by searching for beautiful language in a text, when the original author had a different intention. Gemma enjoyed being immersed in the reading of poetry and analyzing the meaning behind Langston Hughes ‘Dreams’.

Please enjoy some of our pieces.

Junior School Festival of Drama

Junior School Festival of Drama

Our Prep to Year 2 students enjoyed our Festival of Drama on Monday and Tuesday. It was really special that we can have this event when the kids have missed out on so many other things this year. We had six wonderful instructors, led by the talented Sara Reed, an alumnus of KDS who is also a professional actor, dancer and singer. Over the two days, students engaged in: Improvisation through movement, theatre sports, dance games, teamwork & movement, character study/masks, and music & dance.

What an excellent way to start our week!

Year 5 Graduation Kiddush Cups

Year 5 Graduation Kiddush Cups

As a memento of their time in KDS Junior School, our Year 5 students painted their own unique kiddush cups this week. Each student created their individual cos l’mitzvah, a goblet with which to perform the mitzvah of reciting kiddush on Shabbat. The Friday night kiddush explicitly affirms that we were lovingly gifted Shabbat as a holy day. It is our hope that our Year 5 graduates will take their Jewish identity and carry it with pride as they move to the next phase of their learning journey. L’chaim!

Walking Together

Walking Together

Greeted by Indigenous elder, Uncle Herb Patten, at the special Ngargee Tree on the 5th of December, myself and other like minded Jewish people were welcomed to country and played an awe-inspiring song using a gumtree leaf. It was here that we began the St Kilda south walk portion of the JCCV ‘Walking Together’ trek to Fed Square to join the Pillars of Light Festival.

This, however, was no ordinary walk. Almost exactly to that day 83 years ago, William Cooper and other members of the Indigenous community marched for Jewish freedom, protesting against the German Embassy. In a poetic display of solidarity, we mimicked this, commencing the annual walk of Jewish people illustrating support for the Indigenous community. Throughout Melbourne and at various locations, Jewish people walked to say thank you, to advocate, and to inspire unity.

Although my group took a shorter version to arrive in the city, within the 90

Family Shabbat at our ELC

Family Shabbat at our ELC

After so many restrictions this year, it has been a joy to finally welcome our families to celebrate Shabbat with our beautiful ELC students and teachers. Last week our Junior Kinder children showcased  their knowledge and joy of Shabbat.  Today, it was the Senior Kinder children who proudly lit candles, made brachot over the wine and challah and sang their hearts out.

Shabbat Shalom!

Year 10 Camp Update

Year 10 Camp Update

Shalom again from our wonderful Tiyul b’Vic.

This week we emerged a little dusty and dirty but uplifted from four days at Buandik, our bush campsite in Gariwerd (Grampians) National Park. There, together with the Indigicate educators, we set up camp - our temporary community. Through walks, talks and living in the bush, students were able to connect to the environment at a deep level, enriched by First People’s perspectives. We had a very special Shabbat, with tefillah facilitated by the students and fitting to the setting.

Sunday morning saw the cohort divide into four groups - art tour, deeper exploration of Buandik and two overnight hike groups. These each provided unique experiences, a real highlight, while also allowing students to interact in smaller numbers.

The Aviv cohort converged in Horsham for a treat pizza lunch and then traveled to the Little Desert. After the physical exercise and enjoying the g

Dear Community,

With an enormous flurry of activity, our school year is drawing to a close. Given the array of camps, drama festivals, graduation ceremonies, Kadima days and excursions that we are undertaking, I am sure that our students will be suitably exhausted by the middle of next week.

We are very grateful that we have been able to offer such a varied program as the easing of restrictions has allowed us to reinstate the many events that had been put on hold.

I have expressed this many times in this column throughout the year but I want to take this opportunity to offer my gratitude to the members of our wonderful community who have carried us through a very challenging year.

The Senior Leadership team has worked so hard to ensure that we understood the regulations, anticipated the impact of decisions and planned accordingly. The collaborative wisdom, care and shared values have ensured that we have been able to respond

Peer connection and relationship building in the classroom;

Excursion to Clip & Climb;

Back to School Service;

Inter-House Swimming Carnival.

We can't wait to welcome students new and old into their Year 7 classrooms next year.

Ronnie Issko's 18 years of service

Ronnie Issko's 18 years of service

After 18 years of service, Ronnie Issko completed his last Parent Security Group shift this week. Ronnie has been a King David parent since 2003. He is a founding member of the Parent Security Group PSG at the Southwick campus, setting it up with David Michalson. Ronnie ran the Southwick parent roster and spoke at many parent Orientation nights to recruit new PSG volunteers until 2011 when his oldest son Matthew moved over to our Magid campus. Ronnie ran the Magid roster for a few years until a handover to Mark Liner.

Ronnie completed the full 6 month Magen program, and protected at Synagogues and public community events. He also completed the CSG Venue Commanders course that allowed him to take charge at running the security at Kings Carnival on 3 occasions and volunteered as a protector at countless others. Over the years Ronnie has stood outside the school looking after the safety of our kids over 150 times.&

Year 11 Sailing Camp

Year 11 Sailing Camp

Our Year 11 students have been sailing!

After a trip down to Metung and boat briefings, our Year 11 students took to the water this week to begin basic lessons in the art of sailing. With a massive information overload at the start - the difference between sheets, gybe and tacks, knowing where safety equipment is located - the students learned sailing techniques. They spent the night at Barrier Landing with a vegetarian spaghetti bolognese for dinner. While the weather was a bit wet, our students still had a great time.

KDS staff seize the fire

KDS staff seize the fire

Staff members across KDS have been offered the opportunity to participate in Catchafire. Catchafire is an online skills-based volunteer program that matches skilled professionals across the globe with people working in the nonprofit sector looking to develop their capacity in specific areas. Catchafire has been offered to hundreds of Jewish organisations across Australia courtesy of Australian Jewish Funders, with wide impact reported within a few months. A number of staff participated in an orientation workshop, following which they were able to opt into a variety of programs, from online leadership coaching and strategy development, to animation and time management.
