Insights - studentship - the art of being a great student

Dear Community,

There is a wonderful parable that I presented at the recent Years 6-8 Parent Information evening which I think is worth sharing more broadly. There was a family who packed all their belongings into a cart in order to move from one town to the next one. They completed the journey across a number of days. When they finally arrived at the outskirts of the new town they encountered an old woman sitting on a rock and they went up to her and asked if she was from the town. She said that she was. They asked, “What are the people in this town like?” She responded, “Tell me, what were the people in your last town like?”

The father responded: “They were all horrible. They were judgmental, competitive and exclusive. They gossiped maliciously and that’s why we are seeking a new place to live.”
The old woman said. “You will find people like that in this town too.” The family trudged off ahead.

Later on that day, another family came along with their wago

It all Matters in Science - Year 6

Year 6 students are learning about Matter and States of Matter. Particles are very small and cannot be seen via the eye. In order to visualise particles and understand scientific concepts of states of matter, students used playdough models to create particles and then used them to represent how they are arranged and they move in different states.

EISM sport competition off to a winning start

EISM sport competition off to a winning start

Round 1 of the EISM Senior competition began on Wednesday. KDS faced Huntingtower in basketball, soccer, tennis and badminton. It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 12 students turn out to represent KDS, with excellent support from the Years 10 and 11 cohorts. There were some very strong performances and some great team spirit shown. The basketball teams were dominant in their matches, with the KDS girls’ team winning 61-13. The boys match was closer, with KDS getting over the line 34-24. The boys soccer team dominated possession, winning 7-1, while the girls team had a gutsy 2-2 draw. Congratulations to the girl’s team, who displayed fantastic school spirit during the match. The boys tennis team had a see-sawing fixture with the Huntingtower team. This match ended in a 2-2 draw, with the total games won also drawn 16-16. KDS’s first foray into mixed badminton saw a steep learning curve for the players. KDS were competitive in the doubles, and showed excellent spirit despit

Wominjeka! Gan Seorah welcomes Dinnawan the Emu

As part of our Indigenous learning program, Gan Seorah has welcomed travelling mascot, Dinnawan the Emu. Designed to build a connection between early learning centres and services around Australia, the Koori Curriculum provides eight plush toy Australian Animal Mascots to volunteer centres. Our visitor is here to learn about the land on which we learn and play, and we are then asked to share our learning through filling in a scrapbook that documents Dinnawan's adventures. This has been a wonderful opportunity to explore our large map of Australia, identifying where we live on Wurundjeri and Boonwurrong land, as well as tracking Dinnawan's journey through Victoria, NSW and the ACT so far.

To extend the children's learning about emus, we researched on the big screen, watching videos of emus in the wild, learning facts about emus and even watching some First Nations people performing their Emu dance. The children have been fascinated by this learning, creating Dinnawan paintings and in
