Our Year 7 Camp experience

Our Year 7 Camp experience

Camp reflections March 2023

By Rafaella Chait & Willow Solewicz

We enjoyed a variety of water sports during our camp experience, including surfing and body boarding at Anglesea Surf Beach as well as stand up paddle boarding at the lake. Our wonderful instructors, Xander, Blake, Ruby, Will and Jemma from GoRideAWave taught us all the amazing skills we needed. Please click here to see some images from our time at camp.

Throughout camp, we went on many walks to the beach, the lake and the area around the campsite. As well as walks during the daytime we went on a night time walk to watch the sunset.

Increasing our joy for Adar

Increasing our joy for Adar

On Purim, we celebrate the joyous reversal of fortune that the Jewish people experienced in ancient Persia. Slated for annihilation, the Jews were miraculously saved by the heroism of Queen Esther and Mordechai, and the evil decree was reversed. This festival focuses on 'turning things upside down' - celebrations, costumes, and of course, delicious food. In the lead in to Purim we have been increasing our merriment and joy at our Dandenong Road campus with the following themed days: Crazy Hair and Hat day, Bows and Bandanas, Silly Socks and, today, we have Sparkle and Shine. Please see our myKDS Photo Gallery for photos of the fun which will be updated as more photos come in.

The whole Megillah at the ELC

The whole Megillah at the ELC

This morning we met Sidra Moshinsky, the Director of Jewish Life and Learning, to learn a bit more about Purim. Sidra explained that just like we read stories in books, so to the story of Purim story is found in a scroll called a Megillah. The she took out a real Megillah written by a Sofer (Scribe) with ink and a feather and the children watched eagerly as she rolled it out! Please click here to see some photos of Sidra's visit. We looked closely at the letters and noticed how the Megillah is made up of lots of parchment papers sewn together.

Sidra also asked us, what do we already know about Purim?

Jackson- we sing songs Chag Purim

Sage- Mordecai wouldn't bow down to Haman

Alma- we dress up

Insights: Be excellent to each other

Insights: Be excellent to each other

Principal Marc Light is currently on sabbatical. Here is an Insights column published early in 2020 which remains timely:

Dear Community,

In one of my favourite scenes from the classic ’90s movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted are placed in an uncomfortable position when asked to offer some words of wisdom to their adoring followers. The advice they come up with is indeed sage, they say – “Be excellent to each other!”

Following recent prominent stories in the media, it seems increasingly apparent that our society needs the wisdom of Bill and Ted. In the past week we have seen the murderous scourge of domestic violence and partner abuse once again as front-page news and we have seen the bullying of a young indigenous boy entering social media feeds.

The responses to these have shown both the best and the worst of humanity.

A wonderful night with our Year 7 parents

A wonderful night with our Year 7 parents

Last night our Year 7 parents came together in a welcome event hosted by the KDSPA. Please click here to see photos from the evening. Russell Kaplan, Acting Principal, encouraged everyone to join in and become active members of the KDS community and Jayne Wise, Head of Middle School, gave families an update from Year 7 camp where our students have learned different skills and formed new friendships. We are sure there will be lots to catch up on at the Shabbat dinner table tonight when the students return!

Sharing the story of an eating disorder with our community

Sharing the story of an eating disorder with our community

This week our school community was very fortunate to hear from Asha and Tanya Mendel as part of our Parent Education series. They very bravely shared their experience of Asha's eating disorder. They talked us through the onset of the illness, the daily experience, the assistance they received, and the impact on family and friends. They also spoke about the warning signs and highlighted that parents should watch out for gastric issues, mood changes and social withdrawal. It was an extraordinarily personal evening which was highly emotional and it was incredibly generous of the Mendel family to open up to the King David community.

Hearing Naftali Bennett

Hearing Naftali Bennett

Our Year 11 and 12 students were afforded the opportunity to hear from former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett at a combined event for Melbourne's Jewish schools. Mr Bennett spoke to the students of his varied life, growing up in Haifa to parents who had made aliyah from the United States, his distinguished service in the Israeli Defence Forces, his failures and then huge success in developing a 'start up', followed by his decision to enter into Israeli politics, rising from Binyamin Netanyahu's Chief of Staff to being the Prime Minister himself. He shared the difficult decision to be part of the broadest coalition government Israel has seen, consisting of religious parties, left and right wing, as well as, for the first time, an Arab party. Following his talk, Mr Bennett invited questions from the audience, and then an IDF musical ensemble entertained students. Student leaders from the four participating schools all played a role in the<

Hands on history at Como House

Hands on history at Como House

Last week, our Year 1 students visited Como House to experience history through artefacts. Please click here to see some photos of the excursion. Here are two summaries from our Year 1 reporters:

"We did guess who broke the doll. In guess who broke the doll, we looked for clues in the (very big) garden, then we had a tour of the mansion. In the tour of the mansion, we saw the olden days toilet ( or chamber pot), it was disgusting. Last but not least, olden days games! It was the best day ever!" - Alexander (Lexi) Perlman

"We went on the bus and then we got to Como house. My first thing I did was a skip race. I also played croquet with my friends. We played hot potato and it was really really fun. We also played the sack race. Next

Creating chemical reactions in GiST

Creating chemical reactions in GiST

The lunchtime club GiST is a unique opportunity for girls in Year 2, 3 and 4. Through a range of strategies including engaging in projects connected to the real world and connecting with female STEM professionals, the club aims to:

Build confidence and self-efficacy in STEM

Increase engagement and interest in STEM

Foster a growth mindset

Build perceptions of women in STEM

This term our ‘hands on’ and ‘minds on’ investigations are all about chemical reactions. Please click here to see some pictures of our experiments. Through experimentation, students have learnt about acid-base reactions, endothermic reactions and using senses to observe changes. The GiST girls have displayed their curiosity

Examining Purim at the Middle and Senior Schools

Examining Purim at the Middle and Senior Schools

Students in the Middle and Senior Schools have been spending time in Jewish Studies classes this week doing deep dives into the story of Purim.

In Year 6 students have been engaged in an ethics unit, looking at what Judaism has to say about sustainability. To that end, students reviewed the Purim story and focused on the 4 mitzvot of Purim and how they might put the mitzvah of Matanot L'evyonim (Giving to the Poor) into practise.

In Year 7 students focused on the theme of ‘V’nahafoch Hu’ meaning everything upside down. They reviewed the Hebrew song, “Mishenichnas Adar” (When Adar arrives, we increase our joy) and the whole story of Purim that is found in Megilat Esther (the scroll of Esther) through fun activities and a quiz.

In Year 8 students looked at expulsions throughout Jewish history and then focused on the experience of the exiled Jewish community in Persia. This ties into the study o

Investigating the causes of land change use at Alphington Mill

Investigating the causes of land change use at Alphington Mill

On Monday 27 February, VCE Geography students headed to Alphington, Melbourne for their field trip. Their main purpose was to investigate the causes of land use change at the old Alphington Paper Mill site and the various social, economic and environmental impacts of the new residential development of Yarra Bend. The industrial site of the Alphington Paper Mill had significant negative impacts on the eco system of the Yarra River and it was interesting to evaluate how a residential development will have positive impacts on the river. We began our day with an interesting discussion from members of the Alphington Paper Mill Action Group and used various field techniques to gather data which will help the students answer their research question and hypothesis.

Well done VCE students on a fantastic field trip day!
