Years 1, 2 and 6 perform compositions by Year 6

Students from the Junior and Middle Schools came together for a fun music experience at the end of last term. This project started way back in Semester 1 with students in 6EG learning about songwriting in their music classes. They then demonstrated this learning by composing their own nursery rhymes, which involved developing lyrics, rhythm, melody, and harmony. Through a drafting process, these compositions were then published in a book of sheet music with illustrations by the composer to accompany their work.

This collection of nursery rhymes were then sent to the Junior School where students in Year 1 and 2 interpreted the nursery rhymes from the sheet music in their music classes. Students not only learnt how to sing the songs but in some instances played percussion instruments to create different textures and tone colours.

Finally, both the composers and the performers came together for a collaborative concert of Year 1, 2 and 6 where the composers spoke about their compositions and the performers gave the world premier performance of each of the nursery rhymes. Please click here to see images from the concert.

Junior students showed how well they can rehearse and sing an original composition and enjoyed meeting the composer. Middle school students got a real kick out of hearing their nursery rhymes being brought to life by their fellow students.
